Castle. Coast. Woodland. And the two of you.

There are easier places to take photographs. But easier isn’t really the point. This Culzean Castle engagement photoshoot gives us something a little different.

One minute we’re walking beneath trees. Then through open gardens. Around a corner, the castle appears. Keep going, and eventually Ayrshire drops away towards the sea. It feels less like finding one beautiful backdrop and more like having several completely different worlds within walking distance of each other. Which makes it a pretty exceptional place for an engagement photoshoot in Ayrshire. And, more importantly, somewhere we can make photographs that don’t all look the same.

Let’s get one thing out of the way. You don’t need to be good at having your photograph taken. Actually, I’d rather you weren’t. An engagement session isn’t two hours of standing in predetermined spots while I tell you where to put your hands.

We’ll walk. Talk. Explore.

I’ll occasionally interrupt because I’ve seen something. A pocket of light. The castle appearing between you. The wind doing something useful for once. Some moments I’ll guide. Others I’ll leave completely alone. The photographs happen somewhere in between. That is generally where the good stuff lives.

Why Culzean Castle?

As an Ayrshire photographer, Culzean is one of those locations that keeps giving. You have the grandeur of the castle, but we don’t need to make everything grand.

That’s important. Because sometimes the most interesting photograph is the quiet one. A small moment beneath the trees. It may be a hand, a glance, a silhouette disappearing along a path. Then we can change the pace completely.

THE CASTLE

Architecture brings structure. Clean lines. Stone. Scale. Drama.

Used carefully, Culzean Castle can give an engagement portrait that feels almost editorial, the kind of image that could sit comfortably across two pages of a magazine.

But I don’t want every photograph to scream: WE WENT TO A CASTLE. The castle is part of the story. Not the whole story.

THE WOODLAND

Then we disappear. The woodland gives us something much quieter. Layers of trees. Broken light. Darkness. Texture. It changes the photographs completely. This is where things can become a little more cinematic. A little less obvious.

And because we’re walking rather than constantly stopping to “take a photograph”, this is often where you begin to forget about me.

Perfect.

THE GARDENS

Then there are the gardens. More refined. More romantic. But without needing to become overly sweet. They bring colour, symmetry and beautiful little pockets of light into the session. So we might make something soft here. Then something stranger ten minutes later. That’s the attraction of an engagement photoshoot at Culzean Castle. We don’t have to choose one version of you.

AND THEN THERE’S THE BEACH

This is where we loosen everything up.

The sea, the wind. Open space. Shoes potentially abandoned somewhere they shouldn’t be. The photography becomes less structured. Walk towards me. Walk away from me. Ignore me entirely. Run if you feel like it. Don’t if you don’t.

There is something about finishing near the Ayrshire coast that changes the energy of the shoot, particularly towards evening. The world gets quieter. The light changes. And suddenly we are making a completely different set of photographs from the ones we started with. Same two people. Same afternoon. Different world.

THAT’S WHY I LOVE ENGAGEMENT SESSIONS

Of course, you’ll get photographs. Really good ones, hopefully. But that’s only part of it. An engagement photoshoot gives us something incredibly useful before your wedding. We get to know each other. You discover that being photographed doesn’t require a degree in modelling. I learn how you are together. What makes you laugh. Whether you need lots of direction or hardly any. What feels natural. What doesn’t.

So when the wedding arrives, we’ve already done this bit. There isn’t a stranger turning up with a camera.

There’s me. And we already know how this works.

COMING FROM GLASGOW?
