Family photography does not need to feel like a photoshoot.
No forced smiles.
No awkward posing.
No pretending your house, your children or your life are calmer than they are.
Just the beautifully ordinary parts of family life - kept properly.
This is:
Real family life
Gentle observation
Honest connection
A little chaos
A lot of feeling
Photographs that actually feel like you
This is not:
Matching outfits
Forced smiles
Everyone standing stiffly in a field
Children being bribed into behaving
A photoshoot that feels like work
A documentary family photography session is simple.
You do not need to pose, look at the camera, or keep the children perfectly behaved.
Your family carries on as normal, and I photograph what naturally happens.
Breakfast. A walk. The dog getting involved. Someone refusing shoes. Someone needing a cuddle. The small, real moments that make your family yours.
There is no pressure to perform.
I’ll gently read the room, follow the energy, notice the light, and make honest photographs from real life as it unfolds.
The closeness. The chaos. The humour. The tenderness.
Real family life, kept properly.
I’ll arrive, say hello properly, let the children work me out, let the dog inspect me, and give everyone time to settle.
Then we let life happen.
You make breakfast. Go for a walk. Play. Read. Make tea. Try to get everyone’s shoes on and question all your life choices.
I photograph what is already there.
Calmly. Honestly. With care.
01 — I arrive quietly
I’ll say hello, have a coffee if one appears, and give everyone a little time to settle.
No jumping straight into photographs.
Children work people out quickly, so the less fuss, the better.
02 — You get on with your day
Breakfast chaos. Lego negotiations. Lunch prep. Naps. Sticky-finger snacks. Dog walks. Scooters. The everyday stuff.
If there is something you always do together — Saturday pancakes, a walk to the bakery, the weekly shop — let’s make room for it.
03 — I pay attention
I work quietly and keep things simple. No flash. No asking anyone to repeat a moment because I missed it.
I watch, wait and photograph what is already happening.
04 — We head out, if it feels right
A short walk to the park, the beach or the bakery can bring a different pace and a little more movement to the story.
Still relaxed. Still unposed. Still yours.
05 — I stay long enough for the story to unfold
There is no rushing everyone through a checklist. I stay until the rhythm of the day has had time to show itself.
06 — Afterwards
Your images are edited carefully, then delivered as a considered collection of photographs with feeling.
Not padded out. Not stripped back. Just the moments that belong together.
Inviting someone into your home and around your family is personal. I never take that lightly.
I arrive calmly, treat your space with respect, and take my lead from your family. There is no rushing in, no taking over, and no expectation for your home to look a certain way.
I’m DBS checked, fully respectful of children’s boundaries, and always aware that this is your space, your routine and your story.
My role is to observe with care, make people feel comfortable, and leave your home exactly as I found it - apart from giving you photographs that will mean more with time.
The Chapter - 3 hours - £350
A focused three-hour session built around one part of your day.
Breakfast chaos. A slow morning at home. Playtime on the floor. A dog walk. Scooters to the park.
It is a shorter way into documentary family photography, but still full of the small things that make this chapter yours.
Perfect for families who want to hold onto a particular season before it moves on.
The Story- Full day - £795
A full day with your family, from first coffee to last bath.
The noise, the calm, the half-finished games, the dog under everyone’s feet. No shot list. No performance. You just get on with being a family.
I stay long enough for the day to become a story.
The final gallery feels like a chapter of your life — one you will be very glad you kept.
These sessions take place in your home, or at a place of your choosing.
A small travel addition is made for sessions that take place 40 miles or more from Ayr, Ayrshire.
A gift for the person who is always behind the camera
Every family has one.
The person with thousands of photos of everyone else and barely any proof they were there too.
A documentary family photography voucher gives them something different: time with the people they love, photographed properly.
For new parents.
For grandparents.
For Mother’s Day.
For Father’s Day.
For birthdays.
For Christmas.
For families who keep saying, “We really need proper photos.”
Not another thing for the house.
Something that becomes more valuable with time.
The last time they ask to be lifted.
The last time they fit on your lap.
The last time that toy is everywhere.
The last time they reach for your hand without thinking.
You rarely know when a chapter is ending.
These photographs are a way of keeping it before it changes again.
Not the perfect version.
The real one.
I am a documentary family photographer working across Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Irvine, Kilmarnock, Glasgow and wider Scotland, both at home and outdoors in places that already feel part of family life.
Where do family photography sessions take place?
Family sessions can take place at home, outdoors, or somewhere meaningful to you. I photograph families across Ayrshire, Glasgow and wider Scotland, including Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Irvine, Kilmarnock, Glasgow West End, Pollok Park, Kelvingrove, Rouken Glen and surrounding areas.
The best location is usually the place where your family feels most like itself.
Do we need to pose?
No. That is the point.
This is documentary family photography, so the session is built around real moments rather than stiff posing. I may gently guide you towards better light or suggest something simple if it helps, but I will not ask your family to perform.
What if my children do not behave?
Good. They are children.
They do not need to behave perfectly for this to work. If they are shy, I give them space. If they are wild, I photograph the energy. If they need a snack, we make room for the snack.
Real family life is the story.
Does our house need to be tidy?
No.
Your home does not need to look like a magazine. The point is not perfection. The point is atmosphere, connection and the life that is actually happening there.
A quick tidy is fine if it makes you feel better, but please do not stress about making the house look unlike itself.
What should we wear?
Wear clothes that feel like you and let everyone move comfortably.
You do not need matching outfits. Neutral tones, texture and simple layers tend to photograph well, but the most important thing is that nobody feels dressed as someone else.
Can grandparents or extended family be included?
Yes. Grandparents, cousins, pets and extended family can absolutely be included. These sessions are especially meaningful when they bring generations together.
Do you offer family photography gift vouchers?
Yes. Gift vouchers are available for documentary family photography sessions across Ayrshire, Glasgow and Scotland.
They make a thoughtful gift for new parents, grandparents, birthdays, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, anniversaries or the person who is always behind the camera.
How long does a family session last?
Most family sessions last long enough for everyone to settle and for real moments to happen naturally. The exact length can depend on the type of session, location and what you would like included.
The aim is never to rush people into photographs. The aim is to give the session enough room to breathe.
Can we have a few more traditional family portraits too?
Absolutely. The session is documentary-led, but I am happy to make a small number of relaxed family portraits when the moment feels right. Nothing stiff, nothing over-directed — just everyone together, properly.
How do we book?
You can enquire using the booking form, let me know whether you are interested in a family session or a gift voucher, and I will come back to you with availability, options and next steps.
