Why I love this photo ‘The Best Mans Speech’
I have created this series of posts to describe why I love a particular photo or series of photos. I hope this gives you an insight into my thought process, and the vision I have when it comes to capturing your wedding day photographs. I think about every photo I take, how it will fit in to your day and what strength it will add to the story. I believe that photographs can be very powerful, they can evoke emotion, trigger a memory and even cause you to take action.
For this edition of why I love this wedding photograph I’m taking you back to a wedding I shot earlier last year at the beautiful and historic Blairquhan Castle in Ayrshire.
It was the Wedding of John & Chrissy, an amazingly colourful Scottish Wedding at Blairquhan Castle. Chrissy and John created the most beautifully colourful wedding with many personal touches.
This photo is one of my favourites from that wedding on a bright but fresh autumn Scottish day that was bursting with colour both inside and out, fun and love.
Style
Chrissy and John chose me for my editorial and documentary style of wedding photography, asking that I capture a truly authentic version of their wedding day with little posing and limited direction, they wanted the day to flow with little interuptions and they wanted to make sure they got to spend as much time as possible with the ones they love. On your wedding day you are surrounded by ALL the people you love and care for most in the world, getting to spend time with them will be very high on your list of what you want to do on the day. Spending time away from the party with the photographer won’t be!
Your wedding day will be full of different stories that run alongside the main event…YOU! I want to capture all of these stories for you to look back on and relive time and again.
What I love about this image
What I love about this image is that it tells so many different stories in a single frame.
The beautiful painting of Blairquhan Castle gives the us a real sense of place. In the image we can see the unique and historic architecture and decor of the venue. The original castle was built in 1346, it’s incredible to be surrounded by such history.
I love that the statue is staring into the camera, as though it’s caught me taking the picture. The fact the statue is the only one looking at me as everyone else enjoys the best man’s speech adds a little humour and always makes me laugh.
Most of all, it captures the special moment between the groom and his best man. ‘Moment’ is one of the most important things I look for before choosing to press the shutter button and capture a photograph, it adds strength and narrative to the image.
What makes a good story?
A good image tells a story and freezes that moment in time. I am always scanning the scene for images that tell the viewer the: who, why, when, where or what of the story, the best images capture all of these in one frame.
This image really captures the beautiful relationship between John and his best man as he’s giving his speech. The close relationship, love and respect they had for each other was beautiful and evident throughout the day.
I Love this Wedding Photo, and I hope you do too.
